Now, it is getting ugly

By Danny Russell

The dominance of the first quarter came to bear in the second, with Geelong blasting out to a 51-point half-time lead.

The Cats forwards are having a field day, none more than Jeremy Cameron who has booted four, while his partner in crime Shannon Neale has racked up two. Max Holmes and Brad Close have also kicked two apiece.

The Cats have dominated through the midfield through the busy work of Tom Atkins, Jack Bowes, Holmes, Brandan Parfitt and Mark O’Connor. Lively forward Gryan Miers has been running riot, with 14 possessions. For the Roos, Luke Davies-Uniacke has played a lone hand in the midfield, while Harry Sheezel has a game-high 20 possessions in defence.

The inside 50s favour Geelong 34-22. The Cats have also dominated centre clearances 10-3, a nod to ruckman Rhys Stanley in his 200th game, while they are well on top in contested possessions 76 to 57.

North Melbourne were too sloppy with the ball, allowing the Cats to capitalise on turnovers. They managed a few forays into their attacking arc, with slow, careful build-ups, but that good work was undone by bombing long to Nick Larkey, giving him little chance.

He did kick one in the second term for career goal 200 – the Kangaroos’ first goal of the quarter came at the 25th minute mark.

Cats with creativity and flair, take big lead into HT

Geelong are having fun out there. That last Cats goal summed up a lot of how this game is progressing.

Max Holmes got the goal, but it was Brandan Parfitt that forced the turnover and got the ball to his teammates. From there, Jeremy Cameron had a party trick style handball to the side to put it out in front of Holmes, who could scoop it up and score the goal.

The Cats playing with creativity and flair, helped by the lack of pressure from the Roos.

Geelong enjoyed seven goals to one in that second quarter to take a very comfortable 51-point lead into half-time.

Cats open lead up

Geelong have started to kick away and the scoreboard is now more accurately reflecting their dominance against North Melbourne at GMHBA.

Nick Larkey got one back for the Kangaroos, but it was their only goal this second quarter, while the Cats have had six.

Jeremy Cameron is up to four already, and Shannon Neale and Brad Close two each.

Richmond confirms ACL for young Tiger

20-year-old Judson Clarke will miss the remainder of the season after the club confirmed an ACL rupture, which he sustained in Richmond’s VFL match yesterday.

It’s his second ACL injury.

The third-year Tiger has played 17 senior matches for Richmond since being selected with pick no. 30 overall at the 2021 AFL Draft. Last season, he kicked 11 goals, before a cracked scapula ended his year prematurely.

McKercher subbed off, taken to hospital

Kangaroos have subbed out Colby McKercher after getting a knock to the ribs in the first quarter. He went down to the rooms in the opening term and started the second on the bench to keep being assessed, but has now been taken to hospital.

Charlie Lazzaro has come on as the sub.

Guess who? Jez gets four

11 minutes into the second quarter and Jeremy Cameron has already got his fourth goal.

So, not great news if you’re a Roos supporter.

Cameron outran his opponents down the corridor as the ball made its way inside 50, making himself the perfect option for his teammates. He collected it in the goal square and popped it through.

With Tom Hawkins out (managed), we really could be in for Jezza show today.

Cats go again

And you’ll never guess who… Yep, it was Jeremy Cameron, with his third of the day.

Young Cat Ollie Henry found Cameron in the pocket and from there, there were few doubts on whether the ball would sail through the goal posts or not.

Jez gets his second

It was Jeremy Cameron with a goal around his body from the goal square.

Not the prettiest or cleanest kick but crafty, that’s for sure.

Don’t look at the scoreboard. It is a lie.

Geelong dominated the Kangaroos in every facet in the first quarter at GMHBA, and yet lead by just 13 points. It should be 30.

It took the Kangaroos 13 minutes to penetrate their forward 50m, and even then it was immediately repelled by Tom Stewart. In that time Geelong had been inside 50 a whopping 11 times, with lively forward Gryan Miers running riot.

Geelong couldn’t make the Kangaroos pay. Goals came from Mark Blicavs, Jeremy Cameron, Shannon Neale, Tyson Stengle and Brad Close, but Kangaroos defenders Bigoa Nyuon, Aidan Corr and Harry Sheezel worked over-time to hold them out.

Cats have a slight injury concern with Jack Bowes spotted in the hands of the physio. It is still unclear what his problem was. He had been helping the Cats dominate through the midfield.

The Kangaroos pulled back three late goals through Paul Curtis, Eddie Ford and Blake Drury. But to stay in this game, they have to get the ball out of Geelong’s attack.

At quarter time, Geelong had been inside 50 18 times, while the Kangaroos had been into their attack arc just 10 times.

Close with Cats goal right on the siren

Brad Close closed out the opening quarter with a stunning goal right on the buzzer.

The Cats went coast-to-coast, the ball travelling from half-back right to the goal square. It was a very good-looking bit of footy, that demonstrated just how clean, and quick, this side can be.
